Collaborative problem-solving experience -

Workshop presented by Patricio Felmer, University of Chile.

Abstract

Early secondary (12 to 15 years)

This workshop will introduce the process of engaging with collaborative problem-solving and examining emotions during this process. It will build on work undertaken in this area with teachers and secondary school students in Chile.

During the hands-on workshop, participants will be organised into randomised groups of four to collaboratively solve mathematics problems. We will examine how the teacher can act as a facilitator, answer questions from the groups when needed, and listen to the group's explanation. This will include investigating the role of the teacher in using questioning to support students to further engage with the problem-solving task and ways in which the teacher can develop a context where all students can explain the solution strategy.

After the hands-on collaborative problem-solving experience, the workshop participants will discuss emotions while problem-solving, the collaborative experience, and the role of the teacher as a facilitator and will plan how to introduce such an activity with their students in their classrooms.
