The integration of picture books into primary mathematics lessons -

Workshop presented by Ergi Acar Bayraktar, Technical University Chemnitz, Centre of Teacher Education, Primary Mathematics Education, Germany.

Abstract

Early 7ears (0 to 7 years) and middle primary years (8 to 11 years)

Integrating picture books into primary mathematics lessons offers myriad benefits, including enhanced conceptual understanding, positive attitudes towards mathematics, and opportunities for diverse learning experiences. Longitudinal studies demonstrate the positive impact of picture books on cognitive development, including mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Emotional engagement with story-driven content fosters a positive learning environment, promoting active participation and enjoyment. By adopting effective instructional strategies and addressing challenges, educators can harness the power of picture books to create engaging and meaningful mathematical learning experiences for primary school students.

In this workshop, we will explore how picture books can be effectively utilised as pedagogical tools to enhance mathematical learning experiences for primary school students. Some strategies for teachers to effectively implement this approach are:

  • Selecting appropriate books: choose children's books that align with the mathematical concepts being taught and cater to the age and interests of your students.
  • Integration into lesson plans: integrate the selected books seamlessly into your lesson plans, ensuring they complement and enhance the mathematical content.
  • Interactive read-aloud: engage students in interactive read-aloud sessions where you actively involve them in discussions, questioning, and problem-solving related to the mathematical concepts presented in the book.
  • Hands-on activities: Supplement the reading with hands-on activities and mathematical tasks that allow students to explore and apply the concepts.
  • Reflection and Discussion: Encourage reflection and discussion after reading sessions to deepen understanding, address misconceptions, and promote critical thinking.
