Regenerative Design Awards -

Entries are now open for the Regenerative Design Awards for year 12 and 13 students in New Zealand high schools.

Entries close 25 September 2026 at 3pm.

Regenerative design puts back more than it uses, encourages regrowth and is net positive to the planet.

We want you to think outside the box to create something sustainable, recyclable or innovative that mindfully uses or restores Earth's resources.

The Regenerative Design Awards are proudly organised and sponsored by David Trubridge, Massey University and New Zealand Graphics and Technology Teachers Association (NZGTTA).

Regenerative design - David Trubidge

“If we can’t make it regeneratively, we should not make it at all. Aesthetic beauty for its own sake is a luxury and distraction we can no longer afford. We are currently using the Earth’s resources faster than they can be replenished. That is simply not sustainable; you can’t sustain a system that is failing. So we have to do more: we have to rebuild. That is regenerative design.”

Design brief

  • Do your research into what constitutes regenerative design.
  • Consider an object or a process that we really need.
  • Create a design that uses only materials and energy that are replenished faster than they are used, and, at the end of a long, useful life, can return to the environment and nurture new life and growth.

Entry requirements

  • Entries can be hand-drawings, models, digital models, or photographs of prototypes, with annotations explaining your idea, all presented on an A3 PDF.
  • Maximum of 2 A3 pages in PDF or JPEG format.
  • This competition is for year 12 and 13 students in New Zealand high schools.

It is important to show and explain how the object can be made. If drawings, either digital or analog, are too vague they cannot be considered, however good they might look.
